Nearly one year after the official opening, the Bud and Susie Rogers Garden is completely paid for and ready to attract people of all ages this summer to its various activities and programs.
The $3 million capital campaign started in 2015 came to a close with a generous gift made by Sandra Haslinger and Family, whose name will forever be commemorated on the Green—one of three focal points in the Garden space. The Haslinger family has long supported the Akron Art Museum through education and collection gallery support.
“We love this museum and what it means to Akron,” said Myriam Haslinger, board member of the Akron Art Museum. “Our hope is to see this truly unique space full of life, bringing joy to all who visit for years to come.”
Akron Art Museum Executive Director and CEO Mark Masuoka praised all who supported the Garden, saying, “We are especially grateful to our generous donors for their commitment to supporting a vibrant, living arts ecosystem in our community—advancing the museum’s vision to make a creative life available to all who seek it.”
In celebration of this achievement, the Akron Art Museum will expand its award-winning programming into the Garden all summer long. The summer concert series Downtown@Dusk returns for the 33rd year beginning June 22 and running through Aug. 10. A full line-up of local bands, from rock to jazz, is scheduled. Wellness Wednesdays will present free lunchtime enrichment activities in the Garden, ranging from tai chi and yoga to zumba.
The art museum’s education department will offer free Family Days programs on the Garden’s Sandra Haslinger and Family Green and in the galleries. The museum also will launch its inaugural summer of CampCreate in two, week-long sessions (one for ages 6 to 8 and the second for ages 9 to 12.) CampCreate presents “Extreme Art” day camps in June for children to immerse themselves in fun, messy and experimental creative experiences with other aspiring young artists. A complete listing of Akron Art Museum activities and events is available online: www.AkronArtMuseum.org/calendar.
The Bud and Susie Rogers Garden was made possible by a lead gift from Rick and Alita Rogers, and is named in honor of Rick Rogers’ parents, longtime community volunteers and museum supporters, Bruce “Bud” and his wife Suzanne “Susie” Rogers. The one-acre civic commons in downtown Akron along the museum’s south side was dedicated in July 2016.
Designed by OLIN Partners, the garden is a flexible green space that accommodates museum programming, temporary and permanent art experiences, performances, events and visitor-generated outdoor experiences ranging from family picnics to relaxation and yoga.
The Bud and Susie Rogers Garden is a key component and shining example of what is possible—helping to reimagine downtown Akron. Additional supporters of the Bud and Susie Rogers Garden include: The Lehner Foundation, State of Ohio, Akron Community Foundation, W. Gerald and Patricia R. Austen, John V. Frank, Sandra & Richey Smith, The Ruhlin Company, Paul Kruder and Family, The Akron Garden Club, and William Cameron and Elizabeth Brainard Sandwick Family.
The Akron Art Museum, dedicated to enriching lives through modern and contemporary art, showcases regional, national and international art created since 1850. The museum’s collection is presented in a spectacular facility designed by Viennese architectural firm Coop Himmelb(l)au and includes over 5,000 works of art, with a strong focus on contemporary painting, sculpture and photography. Nearly a dozen exhibitions each year present prominent artists in various media including painting, sculpture, photography, video, design and glass.
In addition to its ever-changing collection and exhibitions, the museum offers many opportunities to Live Creative through programs that include films and video, lectures, workshops, tours and concerts.
