If you walk the halls of any Akron Public School and hear the heartfelt melody of a violin, the singing of a flute or the bright burst from a trumpet, you might just be hearing one of the 200 instruments donated through the Music Alive program.
Since 2007, 200 APS students have received instruments thoughtfully donated by people just like you. These students, who would not have otherwise had access to instruments, are now eagerly learning to play thanks to a partnership between WAPS 91.3 The Summit and Taylor Band and Orchestra. The Summit has been collecting and distributing donated instruments that have been restored by Taylor Band and Orchestra. These instruments are placed directly into the hands of students who need them most.
Music is essential in schools because it offers students an outlet for expression and teaches them discipline associated with rehearsal and practice. Research has shown that students who learn a musical instrument from an early age develop critical-thinking skills and improve in their cognitive development. Studies also found that students who participate in music education are more likely to graduate from high school and go on to college while avoiding substance abuse problems.
If you have an instrument gathering dust that you’d like to donate, or if you would like more information, please contact Marilyn Stroud at (330) 761-3099 or
