Diamonds defeat Racers with 9-1 victory, series sweep

After starting the season 2-10, the Carolina Diamonds (6-10) have rebounded, defeating the Akron Racers (5-11) for the fourth game in a row to earn the series sweep and their sixth victory of the season.

 

Carolina pitcher Katie Burkhart was electric in the cirlce, throwing seven innings for a complete game victory over the Racers. Burkhart struck out nine Akron batters while allowing just one run on three hits. Her ERA dropped to 3.50 on the season.

 

The Diamonds compiled 10 hits on the day with GiOnna DiSalvatore scoring two runs on one hit for two RBIs.

 

Right fielder Sharonda McDonald provided the offensive spark for the Racers, batting 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored. Lisa Modglin had the only other Racers hit in the game.

 

Kristina Thorson started the game for the Racers, throwing 5.1 innings while giving up seven hits, five runs and four walks. She was replaced in the sixth by Jen Mineau who lasted 0.1 innings while giving up two hits and one earned run (four unearned) while walking one batter. Hillary Bach took to the circle next for the Racers, allowing one hit while striking out one batter.
