ACCESS Shelter and its community of supporters has lost its leader and Executive Director Lynn Budnick
After bravely and successfully battling cancer a number of times, a recent recurrence led to Budnick’s passing on Feb. 13, at The James Cancer Center in Columbus.
She became the executive director of ACCESS Shelter in 2008. During her tenure, ACCESS emerged as a leader in empowerment for homeless women and children while keeping its shelter at capacity, providing safe housing, and building self-sufficiency and self-esteem through its supportive programming.
While at ACCESS, Budnick was awarded both the 2016 Summit County Historical Society Woman of the Year “Courage” award and the 2018 GAR “Glass Half Full” award. She was a mentor and role model for many other female leaders in the community. She will be missed greatly by her Board of Directors, staff and friends of ACCESS.
While the ACCESS Board of Directors continues the search it began in late 2018 for a permanent executive director, Jackie Hemsworth, director of advancement has been named the interim executive director. Operations at the shelter will continue without interruption.
Her family is planning a celebration of life to be held next week. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to be made in Lynn’s name to ACCESS Shelter. For info, visit www.access-shelter.org.
