ACCESS, Akron’s homeless shelter for women and children, will host an online “Christmas in July” event, Thursday, July 25, to encourage the community to “feel the spirit of the holiday season” and donate much-needed items for its residents.
A few of the most-needed items on the shelter’s Amazon Wish List are pillows, umbrellas and planners.
“While we may take having items such as pillows, umbrellas or a planner for granted in our daily lives, some of our guests have not had access to these items,” said Jackie Hemsworth, executive director of ACCESS Shelter. “We want the women we serve prepared to take the next step in their journey to independence.”
Those wishing to participate in the “Christmas in July” event may donate on the center’s website, access-shelter.org, or purchase items online from its Amazon Wish List.
Since 1984, more than 20,000 homeless women and children have been served by ACCESS. The staff at the shelter provides safe housing but also encourage the development of self-esteem while working on self-sufficiency through its holistic and supportive programming.
