Akron KidsFest will bring kids and families to Lock 3 Park on Saturday, June 15, to experience science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) through interactive play.
The free festival begins at 10 a.m. and is a collaboration between Akron Children’s Museum and the city of Akron.
According to lead organizers Derek and Kelly Glover, the family festival will include 25 all-day, free activities, including robotics, paper rockets, and esports with the University of Akron, Ozo Bots coding and logic maze building with the Akron-Summit County Public Library, magnetic slime and hydrophobic sand with the National Inventors Hall of Fame, and a vast array of other interactive stations from human foosball and the Soapbox Derby to chess tournaments and a ninja course.
“We wanted to create an opportunity for kids to experience a variety of activities that will expose them to different skill sets,” said another lead organizer of Akron KidsFest, Ben Tegel. “A small, but powerful introduction to science, technology or any STEAM field—through play—might spark a brilliant future or fuel a lifelong passion.”
“Our entire committee, plus our volunteers, nonprofit partners, and corporate sponsors are thrilled to play host to families and STEAM professionals to fuse those connections between play and development,” added Kelly.
According to the organizers, children may also join in special scheduled events throughout the day like a junior chef competition, a slam dunk contest, and visits from a few princess favorites.
The festival is made possible thanks to presenting sponsors Westfield Bank and Auxin Group Wealth Management, along with key contributors West Akron Kiwanis, Downtown Akron Kiwanis, The University of Akron, Steere, and Kids World Play Systems.
