Akron Civic Theatre will host a free presentation of the films “Elf” and “The Polar Express” Sunday, Dec. 15, starting at 2 p.m. The showing includes free popcorn for patrons and a holiday sing-along with the Civic’s Mighty Wurlitzer beginning a half-hour before each film. The event is presented by Wayside Furniture.
The Wayside Holiday Movies are free, but tickets are required and may be picked up at Wayside Furniture, 1367 Canton Road in Akron and the Akron Civic Theatre box office, 182 S. Main St. in Akron, Monday thru Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“Elf,” which kicks off at 2 p.m., stars Will Ferrell as Buddy, who is accidentally transported to the North Pole as a toddler and raised to adulthood among Santa’s elves. Unable to shake the feeling that he doesn’t fit in, the adult Buddy travels to New York, in full elf uniform, in search of his real father. A holiday sing-along accompanied by the Civic’s Mighty Wurlitzer organ will begin at 1:30 p.m., when patrons will help raise the Elf Spirit Clausometer.
“The Polar Express,” which begins at 6 p.m., is an adventure based on the children’s book by Chris Van Allsburg. When a doubting young boy takes an extraordinary train ride to the North Pole, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery that shows him that the wonder of life never fades for those who believe. The holiday sing-along accompanied by the Civic’s Mighty Wurlitzer organ will begin at 5:30 p.m.
“We are grateful to Wayside Furniture for helping us create a beloved and highly anticipated Christmas tradition at the Akron Civic Theatre,” said Howard Parr, executive director of the Civic. “This is the third year Wayside has sponsored free Wayside Holiday Movies, and we look forward to getting Akron families in the spirit of the season again this year.”
