The Wounded Warriors Amputee Softball Team will make a much anticipated stop in Akron on June 20, 2015. Historic Firestone Stadium will be the site of the event, home of the Akron Racers.
Quietly working behind the scene for nearly two years, Michael Livingston, director of The Projects Summit, Inc, approached Joey Arrietta, Co-Owner/GM, of the Akron Racers, and the two immediately connected on their desire to bring these athletes to Akron.
“We, veterans, come back broken and despair,” Livingston said. “It’s about time we take this and have a feel good moment.”
The very athletically talented amputee softball team members have been barnstorming around the country beating the best competition available. Their motto is, “life without a limb is limitless,” and the team is comprised of veterans and active duty servicemen who have served our country in the global war on terrorism in Afghanistan and Iraq. They have been featured nationally on ESPN, HBO, Fox NBC and Sports Illustrated.
“We couldn’t be prouder than to host these incredible athletes,” remarked Arrietta. “This will be a night to remember for all of us.”
Tentative plans are for the WWAST to play a double header against the Akron Racers and the Akron Firefighters. Tickets will be $10 with all proceeds supporting the WWAST program. The night will include a silent auction and various in-game fund raising activities.
