The Akron Marathon Charitable Corporation staff and Board of Directors have named seasoned runner Verrelle L. Wyatt their new race director, succeeding Brian Polen in the role.
Wyatt, an Akron resident, will be responsible for planning, organizing and staging the Akron Marathon events.
He joins the Akron Marathon team from Physio Balance and Sports Performance, LLC where he serves as owner and physical therapist. He has over 10 years of experience in leadership and operational management.
“In 2019, we saw more than 15,000 runners across our events,” said Anne Bitong, president & CEO of the Akron Marathon. “Verrelle brings a fresh perspective, an incredible energy and experience from racing our blue line that we know our runners will love.”
Former race director Polen is the owner of specialty running store Vertical Runner of Wooster, Ohio, which he said is growing, compelling him to put his energy into the store.
“Brian has been a part of the Akron Marathon for the last seven racing seasons, and his love of this race series and sport have been vital in shaping the Akron Marathon into what it has become today,” Bitong added. “And while Brian will be deeply missed, we’re thrilled for his growing business and that he will join us as a runner on the blue line this year.”
With race registration open, thousands have already registered for the 2020 season. Race officials are encouraging early registration to guarantee a spot as they anticipate all events to sell out.
The following race dates are confirmed:
● FirstEnergy Akron Marathon, Half Marathon & Team Relay, Sept. 26
● Goodyear Half Marathon & 10k, Aug. 8
● National Interstate 8k & 1 Mile, June 27
