The Akron Racers Charities, in co-operation with Cuyahoga Community College, will welcome eight universities and colleges from three different states to Firestone Stadium, Friday, Sept. 23 through Sunday, Sept. 25 to share a common goal of raising money for the Akron General, “Muffins for Mammograms” Program.
The 2016 Games for the Cure kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, with Malone University taking on Walsh University. The games will wrap up with Cuyahoga Community College taking on Jackson Community College from Jackson, Mich., at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25.
Malone, Walsh and Tri-C will all give the tournament a decidedly local feel, giving area fans a chance to see many familiar players from their high school days. The impact, however, of this tournament ranges much wider than Northeast Ohio.
Sinclair Community College from Dayton is the fourth team from Ohio in this year’s field. Meanwhile, the other half of the participating teams will all head to Akron from out-of-state. In addition to Jackson, Macomb Community College (Warren, Mich.) and Kellogg Community College (Battle Creek, Mich.) will travel from Michigan. The team travelling the furthest for this year’s Games for the Cure will be Patrick Henry Community College from Martinsville, Va.
The action includes 11 games on the main diamond at Firestone Stadium and four additional games be played throughout the day Saturday on the adjacent Pony Field. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for student’s with ID with all proceeds benefiting the Akron Racers Charities “Muffins for Mammograms” initiative.
