Akron-Summit County Public Library has received a $10,000 grant from the Dick and Chris Chenoweth Fund of Akron Community Foundation to support its digitization of The Reporter, Akron’s African-American newspaper.
Library Director David Jennings said the funds would be used to make The Reporter, 1969 to present, searchable and digitally available. “Although the history of Akron’s African-American community is rich, documentation telling that story is relatively scarce. The project will provide full-text searchable access to every word published in The Reporter for the last 47 years. Researchers will be able to search for names, places, and events,” said Jennings.
Founded in 1874 and now comprised of Main Library, 17 branch libraries and mobile services, the Akron-Summit County Public Library provides resources for learning and leisure, information services, meeting spaces, and programs for all ages that support, improve, and enrich individual, family, and community life.
