To a golfer, weather is never an obstacle. Despite rain, sleet, snow or ice, the amateur as well as the expert, has no problem taking a swing – especially when the stakes are high.
And, with the 28th annual Akron Rotary Chili Open Golf Classic, presented by Wayne Homes, the stakes are high: Raising more funds so children and adults with disabilities can attend Akron Rotary Camp, operated by the Akron Area YMCA. The Chili Open takes place Saturday, Feb. 3, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hale Farm and Village.
Last year, over $190,000 was used to provide financial assistance to families who might not otherwise be able to enjoy summer camp or the year round respite programs offered at the Portage Lakes facilities.
The grounds of the historic Bath location will be temporarily transformed into five unique golf courses, each having nine holes. Distances will range from 65 to 125 yards, so most participants pack putters, wedges, irons and some brightly colored golf balls. They may want to also bring gloves, hats and overall good cheer as bunkers of snow and icy fairways will be the likely terrain.
Registration for the 28th Annual Akron Rotary Chili Open includes green fees as well as admission to the Chili Open Warm-up Party, where golfers will receive a limited edition Chili Open T-shirt, a raffle ticket for prizes, and food and drinks. Winners for closest-to-the-pin, hole-in-one, and overall low score, will also get their just desserts.
Along with the golf event is a 5-pound chili-eating challenge, where the winner will earn a grand prize, awarded by Akron Tractor & Equipment.
