Summit Sports & Social (formally Stay In Play Recreation) has found a new site in downtown Akron, which will enable the group to have a new home base right off one of Akron’s most unique assets: the Towpath Trail.
In the heart of the new brewery district with neighbors like R. Shea and Missing Falls Brewery, the courts are behind the historic Goodrich smokestacks.
The four courts will increase capacity in the programming of traditional volleyball leagues, while testing new events and programming.
Over the past three years, Summit Sports & Social has reached a capacity of 35 to 40 volleyball teams (150 to 250 unique weekly participants) on two courts at the old location behind Canal Park.
The new location, “Canal Courts,” will provide the organization with four courts and the opportunity to grow to 80 to 100 teams (400 to 600 weekly participants).
Summit Sports & Social aims to create an accessible downtown destination. Northeast Ohio residents will be able to conveniently bike to the courts.
“This location will allow us to branch into multigenerational social events that we’ve always wanted to program but never had freedom or adequate space to execute,” said co-founder Andrew Novak. “On any given weekend, we could have a youth volleyball league on a Friday, a children’s sand castle building contest on a Saturday, and then a sand soccer tournament on a Sunday.”
“Canal Courts” was possible through partnerships with the Knight Foundation, Ohio Erie Canalway Coalition, Canal Place (Covington Group) and Akron Civic Commons. Summit Sports & Social wants to encourage the league participants to frequent downtown establishments before and after they play.
