Joe Roebuck from Boy Scout Troop 154 led a group of volunteers to install a flagpole and roses at the Vietnam Memorial located at the intersection of Watson Street, Wingfoot Way and Malasia, in the Goodyear Heights neighborhood.
Roebuck personally built all of the benches, as part of his Eagle Scout Project, and organized the installation.
The location has had three permanent markers at each corner of the property. They were installed many years ago. Since the metal plates were even with the ground it was difficult for residents to distinguish the memorial site. The new flagpole and benches provide the appropriate setting for the memorials.
Listed on the plaques are the following names: Residents believe all of the soldiers listed were from the neighborhood and served during the Vietnam War years.
William Glenn James Aydell
Wayne Roland Donald Hoffman
Allen Ward Robert Stoltz
Ronald Fischer Andy Petty Jr.
David Hoffert Maurice Newman Jr.
The first official flag raising will be on Saturday July 26 at noon, and the event is open to the public. The RIGHT Committee (Residents Improving Goodyear Heights Together) will host the ceremony, which should last about 30 minutes.
