Downtown Akron Partnership (DAP) is accepting applications for the third annual Akron Art Prize sponsored by the Margaret Clark Morgan Foundation (MCMF). Applications will be accepted through July 7 at 5 p.m.
Akron Art Prize is an exciting addition to Akron’s art scene and is intended to encourage conversation and enthusiasm about art and the revitalization of the Downtown core.
The competition starts Saturday, Sept. 6 at the Downtown Akron Artwalk. Winners are announced Oct. 4 at a grand finale celebration in the Akron Art Museum. First place receives $5,000 and the honor of displaying their piece in the Akron Art Museum for a week following the competition. In addition, five $1,000 runner-up prizes are awarded.
The competition is open to both solo and collaborative artists, as well as two- or three-dimensional pieces. Each artist must pay a $25 entry fee and sign an agreement in order to participate. Artists must be at least 18 years of age.
“Participating in Akron Art Prize can take many forms – as an artist, role model, support network or even donation of materials to a sponsored artist,” said Brenda Schneider, senior program officer for The Margaret Clark Morgan Foundation. “An engaged arts community is beneficial for the entire community at large.”
“In its third year, Akron Art Prize strives to engage a larger, more diverse audience in all aspects from making to viewing, inspiring new thought, attending receptions and voting for personally exceptional pieces,” said Courtney Cable, Akron Art Prize coordinator.
Guests age 16 and older with a valid driver’s license may register to vote with their mobile phones. Kiosks are also available for those without texting capability. Voting takes place during a limited timeframe and only within Downtown, encouraging voters to attend and experience the events.
