Consumers looking for deals in and around the Akron area and businesses wanting to tender their goods and services to make that happen have a nice outlet in which to do so: Save Local Now ($LN), a mobile app offered by the Greater Akron Chamber.
“We’re always looking for ways to add value for our chamber members,” said Chad Hamman, vice president of membership for the chamber. “And consumers can download the app for free to find out where there’s deals.”
Save Local Now is only available for Greater Akron Chamber members and comes at no additional cost. When a business joins the chamber the app is included in part of its annual membership dues.
Consumers can download the $LN app, available for iPhone and Android devices, at www.akron.savelocalnow.com or visit the iTunes store and Google Play.
Endorsed by the American Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE), $LN is available “in about 30 – 40 cities across the country” and allows travelers to also take advantage of deals in those cities participating in the program, Hamman said.
The chamber encompasses Summit, Medina and Portage counties, with a few members from Stark and Cuyahoga, Hamman said, and the number of local businesses participating in $LN is “approaching 200.”
Participating $LN businesses are basically autonomous with how much or little they want to provide through the app. They can offer discounts, incentives and promotions on a day-to-day basis, for example, and can modify, deactivate or replace them at their choosing.
And unlike similar app providers who may require businesses to offer specific discounts or determine the length of a promotion, $LN does neither of these, nor does it “take a percentage of a company’s deal,” Hamman said.
“The only thing we ask of our members is that when they post a deal or event, they should honor it,” Hamman added. “And that’s so basic, it goes without saying.”
Once a consumer locates a $LN business on the app, say a restaurant or print shop, that business can provide a Web link to assist further with such inquiries such as the menu, a list of pricing and services, contact information, etc.
The app is “geo-located,” Hamman said, which allows mapping, and uses a default function for those users not looking in a specific location.
If a consumer in Cuyahoga Falls wanted a pizzeria closer to downtown Akron and selected “pizza,” the app. would display pizza shops closest — and registered as a $LN business with the chamber — to the user’s immediate location. The list then continues, showing additional pizzerias closer to downtown.
The menu on the $LN site breaks down offerings, with separate tabs for restaurants, bars, clubs, flowers, gifts, professional services … along with a “Deals” button.
All one needs to do to redeem an offer is show their phone showing the specific promotion to the hosting merchant.
“This is just a fantastic way for them [consumers] to have access at their fingertips to support their local companies,” Hamman said.
