Registration for the Girls on the Run Northeast Ohio (gotrNEO) spring season opens Monday, Feb. 20.
The gotrNEO program is offered each spring and fall throughout its five counties namely (Cuyahoga, Lorain, Medina, Portage and Summit) for local girls in third through eighth grade. Enrollment is limited to 15 girls per team, but if registration for any site should exceed 15, a random lottery drawing will be held. Financial aid for registration costs also is available.
Girls on the Run is an international nonprofit program that inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum that integrates confidence-building, community service and physical activity.
“Our program is dedicated to the unique needs of adolescent girls,” said Executive Director of Girls on the Run Northeast Ohio Robyn Cutler. “Girls on the Run is about helping girls recognize their inner strength and celebrating what makes them one of a kind.”
Teams begin meeting the week of March 6 for 10 weeks. The season then culminates in an untimed 5k for the girls, coaches and family members on May 20 at the University of Akron’s InfoCision Stadium. This non-competitive running event encourages girls to celebrate themselves, each other and simply have fun.
“This past fall, 250 coaches led more than 800 girls through the 10-week program, establishing a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness and maybe more importantly, building up the confidence and character of these young women,” Cutler added.
