Girls on the Run, which integrates running and mentorship to teach life skills to girls, is open for registration. Girls in 3rd through 8th grade in Cuyahoga, Lorain, Medina, Portage and Summit Counties may register to participate in the fall session of the 10-week program, which begins during the week of Sept. 15 and ends in November.
Girls on the Run of Greater Summit is a curriculum-based program that focuses on improving confidence of young girls while preparing them for a 5k event. Through activities such as running, games and discussions about issues important to pre-teens, participants learn how to celebrate being girls. They are empowered with a greater self-awareness, a sense of achievement and a foundation in team building to help them become strong, confident young women.
Sites are hosted at local schools and community centers throughout Northeast Ohio. To find a site in your area, visit the Fall 2014 Program Sites page on the organization’s website. Practice times and days of the week vary for each site.
The online program registration opens Aug. 21 at 9:30 a.m. While most sites will use online registration, there are some sites that coordinate their registration using paper and/or phone. For more information about the registration process, visit the Register Your Girl page on the website.
Certified volunteer coaches administer the 20-lesson Girls on the Run curriculum, which teaches life skills through dynamic, conversation-based lessons and running games. Lessons include topics like making healthy choices, the impact of gossip and bullying and practicing gratitude and positive thinking.
Running is used to inspire and motivate girls, encourage lifelong health and fitness, and build confidence through accomplishment. At each season’s conclusion, the girls and their running buddies complete a 5k running event. Completing a 5k gives the girls a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. The result: making the seemingly impossible, possible and teaching girls that they can.
