Events take place Sept. 16 through 25
Starting Sept. 16, the International Institute of Akron will celebrate Welcoming Week 2016. This annual series of events brings together immigrants and U.S.-born residents in a spirit of unity to raise awareness of the benefits of welcoming everyone – including new Americans.
Last year, there were 245 events in over 80 communities during Welcoming Week, with more than 22,000 people participating. With events from several community groups, the International Institute of Akron announces the following schedule for the Welcoming Week 2016. Most of these events are open to the public.
Saturday, Sept. 17
Global Villages Festival
11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Jennings CLC
Join the United Way of Summit County and the city of Akron’s annual festival celebrating our community’s many cultures. IIA will have a table with a scavenger hunt to help residents explore all the happenings on North Hill. Open to all.
Saturday, Sept. 17
Citizenship Workshop
9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
IIA, 207 E. Tallmadge Ave.
Volunteer educators and attorneys offer free study materials and information on passing the naturalization exam and preparation of citizenship applications. The workshop is open to lawful permanent residents who have five years continuous presence in the U.S. (three years for a spouse of a U.S. Citizen), good moral character and basic English reading and writing. Join IIA, the Akronist and the North Hill Soccer team for the world premiere of a documentary showcasing the community they have built around sport. This outdoor pop-up theater will feature some seating, but please bring chairs and blankets if you have them. Open to all.
