Dru Joyce II, who coached championship teams at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School and was Lebron James’ high school basketball coach, says being a champion is more about the life you lead, not the games you win.
Akronist TV host Pat Reese speaks with Joyce, the author of the book “Beyond Championships,” who shares how his son and James began as rivals and ended up lifelong friends and teammates.
“Basketball would be a vehicle for us to help them learn life lessons,” says Joyce. James, who wrote the forward to Joyce’s book, still applies lessons from his high school basketball career to his life, especially the lesson of the “heart of a servant.”
Team sports are about serving one another and being part of something bigger than themselves, Joyce adds.
