The Akron-Summit County Public Library offers many free computer training classes through its electronic services department, but did you also know it teaches social media and other new technology devices?
On June 21, the Main Library downtown will host a Tablet and E-books workshop from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Classes are offered to support technology and software programs that are utilized within the library system.
“If a new application or technology is trending towards the use by a large number of people and it is cost effective, we will try to develop a class that fits in with our core curriculum,” said Dawn Meehan, technology trainer at the Akron-Summit County Public Library.
Tablet computers and e-readers are popular items in the growing digital age, and the types of e-readers are on the rise. The library started teaching these e-media classes during the holiday buying season to help educate people to make informed purchasing decisions.
The workshop covers a variety of topics such as the process of borrowing a book from the library, the software needed to be downloaded to access the books and how to find books in the library’s e-boot catalog. Meehan brings in devices such as the Kindle, Kindle Fire, Nook and iPad so participants can sample the options.
“I enjoy the excitement I see on people’s faces when they realize they can use their device,” she said. “Some students were given the devices as gifts and do not quite understand this new technology. When they get the process down, they are excited and more comfortable, which to me makes these classes worth every minute.”
More than 70 workshops took place during the last six months and participation varies from branch to branch. Meehan said the classes are well attended and 50 participants was the largest amount of people she has taught.
In addition to the Tablet and E-books class, the library offers social media classes covering Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. Meehan keeps up with technology and social media by reading magazine articles, websites and by hands on experience with the technology.
“I love being able to share that the library has a growing collection of eBooks available for download,” she added. “And they’re all free, with your Akron-Summit County Public Library card!”
