Four local artists will be featured in the upcoming art show at Hazel Tree Interiors. “Cartography of the Soul,” which opens Sept. 5, will feature works from Chuck Ayers, local cartoonist legend; Michael Marras, metal sculptor; Jessica Lofthus, painter; and Karen Starr, co-owner of Hazel Tree Interiors.
These four artists began this collaboration as a result of the friendships they established by taking yoga from the same studio in Akron. When Marras saw Ayers again, after many years, it was a bit of a homecoming for him.
“When I was younger, I visited Chuck’s studio to do a project for school,” said Marras. “That was the first time I had ever met a full-time artist, and had the opportunity to talk with them. After many years of training, I returned to Akron to become a full time artist myself.”
This art show marks the first time Ayers has created art solely for personal expression. “When I agreed to participate, I quickly realized this trip was taking me completely out of my comfort zone,” he said. “I’ve done a number of shows before, but they all consisted of work already completed and published. All of that work was created from a perspective of looking outside myself at the subject. This time I had to create new pieces, and the perspective is that of looking within myself.”
The two other artists, Lofthus and Starr, have collaborated on art projects for Starr’s business Hazel Tree Interiors, with Starr as interior designer and Lofthus as muralist for client projects. This marks the first show Starr will have participated in at her gallery from the perspective of artist, versus gallery owner.
The show, “Cartography of the Soul,” features an opening reception on Sept. 5, from 5 to 9 p.m. The show will run through Oct.25. Hazel Tree Interiors is located at 143 West Market St. in Akron. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visit www.hazeltreeinteriors.com.
