Akron International Friendship (AIF) recently visited Jennings Middle School and Community Learning Center’s 6th Grade social studies classes as part of AIF’s new educational outreach program called Know Your Community- Know Your World (KYCKYW).
During the visit, Donna Demes’ 6th grade social studies classes was able to hear international speakers discuss their home countries. For this visit the students got to hear first-hand accounts of life in Columbia, the Philippines and China. Each speaker used a specially designed PowerPoint that is created to follow Ohio’s education standards for 6th social studies. The presenters then add their own photos and stories to tie into the curriculum.
This is the first year that AIF has implemented the Know Your Community-Know Your World international education outreach program. This school year, 6th graders from Jennings Middle School and Tallmadge Middle School are able to explore counties through first-hand experience of international students from The University of Akron, as well as local immigrant and refugee populations. The program is free to the schools.
