This summer, library lovers and exercise enthusiasts can rack up miles for Mind, Body & Sole: Read at Your Own Pace, the summer reading and wellness experience for the whole family to enjoy, while learning more about library resources, public artwork at Main Library and checking out library items.
Visitors to Main Library are invited to join the staff from the Science & Technology division’s Health Information Center for the one-mile walk. The tours will be given on Saturday, June 14, 21 and 28 at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. Participants are asked to wear comfortable shoes and meet on the first floor five minutes before the program starts. When the tour is completed, participants can add their accomplishment to the reading/exercise log. The goal is to complete the one-mile loop less than 20 minutes.
From June 9 – August 30 participants can join Mind, Body & Sole at any library location in two ways:
1) READ AT YOUR OWN PACE: Read each day for 30 minutes, then check off that date on the reading/exercise log. Participants will receive fun incentives as they reach reading milestones all summer long, and be entered into drawings for prizes. (This is the ‘read only’ option).
2) Choose to be active also! Run/walk at least 26 miles (or 52,000 pedometer steps) over that same period of time. If a pedometer cannot record the movement activity, log ½ hour of activity as one mile. Record the fitness accomplishment on the reading/exercise log. When they have reached 26 miles AND read 26 days, they will receive a Mind, Body & Sole t-shirt and be entered into the GRAND PRIZE DRAWING on September 13 during the Library’s 140th anniversary party.
Partners include the Akron Marathon, Summit County Public Health, Friends of Main Library, Rubber City McDonalds, Akron RubberDucks, Cuyahoga Valley National Park, First Book of Greater Akron and Summit Metro Parks, with support from Akron Children’s Hospital, Akron General Hospital and Summa Health System.
