Ms. Julie’s passion for her community and the future of sustainable food come through in everything she makes at her aptly-named restaurant, Ms. Julie’s Kitchen. The way Ms. Julie talks about a fresh ripe tomato off the vine makes your mouth water for one of her sandwiches, which will certainly have slices of the sweet and salty gems that she picked as recently as five minutes before. Her vegan turnips and greens will have you wondering why you never tried turnips before, and her winter soups will keep you warm through the coldest of days.
Located in Akron’s Firestone Park, Ms. Julie’s Kitchen is one of the only entirely vegan restaurants in Summit County. The eatery serves up original dishes made with fruits and vegetables Ms. Julie and the youth she employs pick from her community garden. The three acres of land on which they cultivate their menu items produces everything from beans to blueberries, and it provides a place for the youth of the community to learn entrepreneurship and valuable life skills. When you work for Ms. Julie, you learn to show up to work on time, turn off the music, and tune in to the soil and sun.
Once you try Ms. Julie’s Kitchen, you will be hooked. Her customers become family and look forward to the warm service and delicious new recipes she innovates on a regular basis.
