Leesa “George” Friday, national Field Organizer for the Bill of Rights Defense Committee (BORDC) and member of the National Leadership Team of Move to Amend (MTA), will speak on “Educating & Organizing for Immediate & Fundamental Social Change” on Sunday, April 3 at 4:00 PM at the WOMB, 915 E. Market Street in Akron.
Friday works with grassroots community and national organizations providing leadership development and skills training ranging from strategic planning and organizing to fundraising, marketing, and community building. Her work particularly focuses on communication, oppression, change, and the role of privilege in transforming power dynamics and fostering broad and deep economic and social justice change.
She is the former Coordinator for the Independent Progressive Politics Network and has served on several boards and Steering Committees, including the Green Party US Black and Women’s caucuses, the North Carolina Green Party, the Institute for Southern Studies, FairVote, the Grassroots Policy Project, the American Friends Service Committee, United for Peace and Justice, and the US Social Forum National Planning Committee.
BORDC works to build an ideologically, politically, ethnically, geographically, and generationally diverse grassroots movement, focused on educating Americans about the erosion of our fundamental freedoms; increasing civic participation; and converting concern and outrage into political action. MTA is a national coalition of individuals and organizations working for an amendment to the US Constitution to unequivocally state that inalienable rights belong to human beings only, and that money is not a form of protected free speech under the First Amendment and can be regulated in political campaigns.
Friday’s presentation program is sponsored by the WOMB (The Way of Mind & Body), Akron Organizing Collaborative and Northeast Ohio American Friends Service Committee.
