Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens celebrates the 50th anniversary of Ohio Mart during the four-day artisan craft fair on the estate, Oct. 6 through 9. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Stan Hywet is located at 714 N. Portage Path.
An Akron tradition and a milestone year for the event, the centerpiece of Ohio Mart is an artisan crafts showcase featuring 120 artists (including more than 20 new exhibitors) with talents in sculpture, photography, garden art, pottery, fiber art, jewelry, metal art, painting, woodworking and more – all set against the backdrop of a beautiful fall landscape. Exhibitor tents are located in the gardens, so guests may enjoy the fall landscape as they shop and explore Ohio Mart.
Ohio Mart was created in 1966 as a way to raise funds for the estate. The historic museum was in its infancy and the Women’s Auxiliary Board (now the Auxiliary Board) had been organized as a volunteer corps just two years prior.
“What began as a fundraiser remains an important financial component and contributor to the operation of the Estate,” said Linda Conrad, president and executive director of Stan Hywet. “We are grateful to the Auxiliary Board for its continued enthusiasm and dedication to Stan Hywet.” A commemorative exhibit about Ohio Mart will be on display during the four-day event.
The fall edition of “Inspiration in Bloom” (part of the combo ticket) is a popular display of fresh flowers by area designers and garden clubs in the Manor House. Guests may vote for “Best in Show” at the end of their tour. The Food Court features Acme Catering, Totally Cooked and Stan Hywet’s Molly’s Café serving lunchtime fare. Other lunch items include Italian sausage and pierogis. The Gingerbread Tent sells Stan Hywet’s popular “secret-recipe” gingerbread cookies and the Bakery Tent sells pastries and cookies from area bakeries. The Tudor Rose Pub features a selection of wine and microbrews as well as lemonade and iced tea.
The Stan Hywet Needlework Guild (SHNG) presents the 45th Stitchery Showcase, on display in the Manor House Auditorium. A judged stitchery display of 300 needlework pieces, all entries must be worked with a hand-manipulated needle on a ground, except beading. Ribbons are awarded in counted thread, canvas, surface stitchery, beading and hand quilting. SHNG hosts a children’s stitchery project on Saturday and Sunday near Playgarden.
Vintage Finds and Curious Goods features the unusual and the collectible, and Ex Libris book tent is the place to find a novel or coffee table book. The Craft Shop features handmade items and the Garden Committee sells beautiful dried flower arrangements, created from flowers grown in Stan Hywet’s historic gardens. Entertainment in the Carriage House Courtyard includes music as well as a pumpkin carving demonstration.
An important component of Ohio Mart is the Sweepstakes Raffle, featuring donated items and gift cards from area businesses and Ohio Mart artists. Tickets are $5 each, 3/$10 and 7/$20. Two separate silent auctions feature a Goodyear blimp ride (never for sale) and a set of Conrad’s tires.
