— The organizers of the upcoming Rubber City Pop Culture Fest want to do something that goes well beyond a typical Comicon. And the two organizers, who are successful purveyors of pop culture, have assembled a unique weekend filled with zombies, wrestlers, nationally known media personalities, artists and a pop culture auction.
The Pop Culture Fest runs from Friday, May 26, through Sunday, May 28, at Goodyear Hall in East Akron. Along with a full roster of vendors and food trucks, the weekend will feature a cosplay contest, “Undaground” wrestling and a “Walk With a Walker” charity zombie walk featuring actors from the “Walking Dead” TV show.
The event has been 20 years in the making. “We have been dreaming about doing this for a long time; the right opportunity presented itself, so we finally took the leap of faith,” said Dan Gorman, co-organizer and a trained medical illustrator, who began working as a sketch card artist and has since worked on over 120 trading card sets.
Gorman has partnered with Jason Miller, who owns Stuff Genie Emporium in Barberton, a seller of comic books and related items. Miller’s also a licensed auctioneer specializing in toys, comics and records. The two have paired up for a number of other successful projects, like the Altered Realm Radio Show and creating “The Akron Knight,” an ongoing online webcomic.
The weekend will include a wrestling seminar, hosted by Undaground Wrestling, Friday evening, from 4 to 8 p.m., with WWE Legend Pat Tanaka. There also will be a “Burning Rubber” main event at 5 p.m.
A Cosplay Contest, run by Rubber City Cosplay, takes place at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday with celebrity judges and prizes for four age groups.
A “Walk With a Walker” Charity Zombie Walk kicks off Sunday morning, from 8 to 10 a.m. at the East Akron Cemetery. Charity walkers will join “The Walking Dead” Celebrity Walkers Stephen Vining and Tim Proctor.
Also on Sunday is a charity auction featuring pop culture goodies, including signed items and art. The auction starts at 3:30 p.m. and will be conducted by J. Miller’s Buddah’s Auction Works. Pics and more info are available at www.buddahsauctionworks.com.
The Pop Culture Fest also includes a host of local and national media personalities, artists and other guests. The event will benefit Akron Snow Angels and Project Retread.
The weekend kicks off Friday, 4 to 8 p.m. with a $5 admission for preview night. Full weekend passes are $25.
