Event kicks off June 17 at Lock 3
— Registration is still open for the Autism 5k and Walk benefiting the Autism Society of Greater Akron (ASGA), which is celebrating 25 years of service to the community. The event will take place Saturday, June 17 at Lock 3 in downtown Akron, with “Hot for Summer” as this year’s theme.
The event, which starts at 9 a.m., includes a 5k walk and 5k run, and a one-mile Fun Walk. The event is family friendly with entertainment, prizes, a resource fair and food. The Akron Children’s Museum will be open and free to event participants. As ASGA’s signature fundraiser, funds raised support 70 percent of the organization’s local programs and services for individuals and families living with autism. This year’s presenting sponsor is Bevan and Associates.
The 5k Run and Walk is timed by RS Racing Systems and prizes will be given for the top runners and walkers in various age groups. Registration is $35 and includes a race shirt, sunglasses and a beach ball (increases $5 on event day).
There is no fee to walk the Fun Mile; individuals and teams fund raise to support the cause. Raise $50 per person for a high-tech race shirt, and $100 per person for the shirt plus sunglasses and beach ball. Online registration remains open until 5 p.m. on Friday, June 16, with in-person registration still available beginning at 7:30 a.m. day of the event. The Autism Society of Greater Akron (ASGA) is part of a nationwide network of affiliates that are part of the Autism Society of America, the nation’s largest and oldest grassroots autism organization. ASGA serves Summit, Stark, Wayne, Portage and Medina counties (OH) and works locally to achieve its mission –to improve the lives of all affected by autism. We do this by increasing public awareness about the day-to-day issues faced by people on the autism spectrum, advocating for appropriate services for individuals across the lifespan, and, providing educational opportunities and support for families, providers, doctors, educators and others on how best to support someone with autism.
