Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad (CVSR) will host a canned food drive April 12 and 13, to benefit the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. Passengers participating may climb aboard the National Park Scenic excursion and pay just $5 when they bring along a non-perishable item or $1 cash to donated.
This year, one in seven people in Northeast Ohio will face hunger, according to the Foodbank, which is the source of emergency food for 500 food pantries, hot meal sites shelters and other hunger-relief programs that directly serve individuals and families in Carroll, Holmes, Medina, Portage, Stark, Summit, Tuscarawas and Wayne counties.
The Foodbank, with its supporters and partners are leading the fight to end hunger in the communities they serve. In 2013, the organization distributed 24 million pounds of food, providing 20 million meals locally for people in need.
For every $1 donated, the Foodbank may buy $7 worth of groceries to provide for the hungry.
If passengers prefer to bring a non-perishable, not-expired food donation instead, The Super Six most needed items are: boxed cereal, peanut butter, canned tuna, canned vegetables, canned beef stew and canned soup.
Passengers may climb aboard at either the Akron Northside Station, or the Peninsula Depot. After purchasing a ticket for $5 and donating a non-perishable item, or $1 cash that will go directly to the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, they will then take a ride through Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Tickets are normally $12 per person.
The National Park Scenic excursion is a two-hour round trip allowing riders the opportunity to see the beauty of Cuyahoga Valley National Park in spring without leaving the comfort of the train. Riders may also choose to enjoy a layover in the Village of Peninsula, if departing the Akron Northside, before the return train ride back to Akron.
While on board, the state-of-the-art GPS driven audio tour will be available. This audio tour, titled Voices of the Valley, immerses listeners in the sounds and stories of the area, from the earliest settlement of the valley, the coming of the Ohio & Erie Canal and Valley Railway, the creation of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, the return of wildlife and more.
The train departs from the Akron Northside Station at 27 Ridge St., Akron, at 10:10 a.m. and 12:10 p.m. and the Peninsula Depot, located at 1630 W Mill St., Peninsula at 9:05 a.m., 11:15 a.m. and 1:05 p.m. No reservations are necessary. Items for donation will be collected at the stations.
