Akron singer/songwriter Angie Haze will once again partner with local students for a collaborative performance, Saturday, April 28, 7 p.m. at Miller South School for the Visual and Performing Arts. The performance, called “The Bigger Picture,” will feature The Angie Haze Project, along with 4th- to 8th-grade students.
Haze will join her uniquely melodic music with the students’ art, dance, drama, vocal and instrumental talents. This is her second year at Miller South, and this year the arts teachers will play a more significant role in helping 80 kids prepare for the show.
“To me, music isn’t something I’m just choosing to do. It’s not a choice. It actually saved my life several times growing up,” Haze has said. She has often spoken of the importance of the arts as a healthy outlet and to aid mental well-being. “I hope to just encourage kids to feel that they can have that outlet and that support system.”
Miller South student musicians have learned her songs, with Haze teaching, demonstrating and bringing awareness to the school’s arts programs and the importance of an arts-based education.
Last year, in a multi-media project, Haze engaged about 60 students from every art discipline to participate. This included dancers and actors doing interpretations of Haze’s songs and visual artists working live during the production. The show also was broadcast on PBS.
Eden Koz, Chairperson of Miller South’s Outreach Project, said, “I have a strong desire to connect the people of Akron with the local talent of this school and to make people more aware of this institution. This is a hidden jewel in our city that if people could only see these little folks and what they can do, their jaws would drop. Angie is a dynamic personality who encourages creativity, is so super with our students and this event is a great way to open the school up to Akron.”
Haze has received a number of awards and was selected as a 2016 Honorable Mention Award Winner in the International Songwriting Competition. “With our folk and worldly music style plus the Miller kids, we will have the crowd feeling like they’re dancing with bells around their ankles,” Haze said.
The performance will take place at Miller South, 1055 East Ave. in Akron.
