Twilight & Flashlights: BLOOM! showcased during evening
garden tours – glass sculptures of Craig Mitchell Smith uplighted
Stan Hywet’s seasonal outdoor exhibit, BLOOM!, will be showcased and up-lighted during Twilight & Flashlights, special evening self-guided garden tours from 7 to 11 p.m. Aug. 20, 21, 27, 28 and Sept. 3 and 4.
Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens is located at 714 N. Portage Path.
“Bring family or that special someone to the estate and enjoy a lovely evening stroll on a summer evening. The dramatically up-lighted sculptures in BLOOM! will make the gardens sparkle,” said Kathleen Norman, director of public programs at Stan Hywet.
Guests will be given a flashlight to borrow, and each evening of Twilight & Flashlights includes self-guided tours of the first floor of the Manor House, and live music on the West Terrace. Delectable savory “small bites,” desserts, wine and beer will be sale.
BLOOM! the glass artistry of Craig Mitchell Smith, features oversize glass sculptures created from kiln-formed glass. With a background as a painter, Smith has developed many techniques that emulate brush strokes in the creation of a piece, which he describes “painting with glass. I see the bottom of the kiln as a canvas. I imagine a source of wind — just as a painter imagines a source of light,” noted Smith.
While every installation may appear random, each sculpture is carefully created with glass, engineered with fittings and metal, and assembled to look as if it has always been a part of the landscape. All glass sculptures are for sale, and large pieces will be installed by Craig Mitchell Smith at the end of the show, a service that is included as part of the purchase price.
Tickets for TWILIGHT & FLASHLIGHTS are $16, adult; $8, youth (ages 6 to 17), children 5 and under are free. Stan Hywet member prices are available. Tickets may be purchased at stanhywet.org or at (330) 315-3287.
BLOOM! featuring the glass sculptures of artist Craig Mitchell Smith is on display in Stan Hywet’s historic gardens through Sept. 20. This exhibit is presented by The Margaret Clark Morgan Foundation.
