Artists with studios at the Akron and Barberton locations of Summit Artspace will finally have their own exhibition—just them—opening April 21 in the downtown Akron gallery with a free reception.
Entitled “SA Period,” the new show will focus on the work of the professional artists who call the Summit Artspace community art centers in Akron and Barberton home.
“We are very proud to be associated with the artists who produce so much beautiful art in our centers. The show is all about them. SA period,” said Summit Artspace Executive Director Kamelia Fisher.
The public is invited to a free reception with the artists on Friday, April 21, 5 to 8 p.m. in the second floor lobby, of Summit Artspace, 140 E. Market St., Akron. The exhibition, which runs until May 20, is in the first floor gallery.
“This is a unique and skilled group who advance the mission of Summit Artspace: to bring art to the community and welcome the community to interact. Here’s a chance to see some of their finest pieces in a gallery setting,” Fisher added.
The Art Center on Tuscarawas and Nine Muses Art Gallery, both in Barberton, are now operated by Summit Artspace as part of its community art centers organization.
“This is a great year to present an in-house show with the two centers at their peak for the number of working studios we have. There’s a contagious energy and enthusiasm among the artists and we invite the community to share it,” Fisher said.
There will be a panel presentation on Thursday, May 18, at 7 p.m., by the artists whose works are in the show. The event is free and open to the public.
Gallery hours are Thursdays and Fridays, noon to 7 p.m., and Saturdays, noon-5 p.m. Summit Artspace is open for Akron Artwalk on May 6, noon to 8 p.m. with artist talks in the studios, galleries open, pop-up shops and music.
Parking is available behind the Summit Artspace building and in a lot between South Summit Street and Broadway when visiting the gallery. Summit Artspace is handicap accessible and has an elevator.
