What’s your New Year’s resolution? What do you think will make Akron even better in 2015? As part of this year’s First Night celebration, we’re helping the Downtown Akron Partnership collect videos about your New Year’s wishes for yourself and the city of Akron.
The video project — part of a partnership with Downtown Akron Partnership and Time Warner Cable’s Connect a Million Minds program — includes free community workshops for these videos at branch library locations. The #BetterAkron2015 challenge asks individuals and families throughout greater Akron to create a 60 second or less video on their smart phone or other mobile device that captures their hopes and dreams for Akron in the new year. Videos collected then will be projected at the John S. Knight Center during the New Year’s Eve festivities.
Through Dec. 11, Media Center staff will conduct our mobile neighborhood journalism workshops free for community members to help shape your video submissions (full schedule is below).
At First Night Akron, Akronist educators will also conduct short sessions to encourage the attending audience to capture videos of their fellow attendees enjoying the event activities and performances. The drop-in training runs from 6 to 9 p.m. in the John S. Knight Center.
Forty student participants will be randomly selected to each receive two admission buttons for First Night Akron on Dec. 31 from 6 p.m. to midnight. In addition, two lucky participants will each receive a $100 gift card to the Downtown Akron business of their choice.
Here are instructions for submitting a video:
- On your smartphone or other mobile device, record a 60-second or less video of your New Year’s wishes for yourself and your city.
- Upload your video to YouTube.
- Include #BetterAkron2015 in the title of your video so it can be shown at First Night. Also include #akronist somewhere in your description.
- If you are a student, include your name and the school you attend in the description of your video. If you are not a student, include just your name.
The deadline for submissions is Dec. 19. Videos submitted after the deadline may still be considered for online publication. Only family-friendly videos will be considered for this project.
