If a person says they’re Asian, but their DNA says they’re black, what changes?
And what’s their reaction at that moment of discovery?
Thirty members of The University of Akron campus – including President Matt Wilson – volunteered for DNA testing by Ancestry.com to uncover their ethnic mix as part of the Rethinking Race series, a two-week forum of events that focuses on opening dialogue around race and race-related issues.
The DNA project was designed to challenge people to explore their own narrative about race. What we can tell from how we look? What can we tell from what science tells us? And what narrative can we tell ourselves and others that could be more inclusive when we talk about race?
It all culminates in “What We Can Tell,” a short video that captures the moment that campus community members learned about their true ethnic mix.
The event takes place Thursday, Feb. 16, 6 p.m., in the second floor of the Student Union, University of Akron main campus, 303 Carroll St.
