Tuesday Musical’s 2016-17 Main Stage Season scoops London and New York City with a world premiere, breaks sticks to make music, demonstrates why two past scholarship winners are now acclaimed professionals, bridges world music, presents Russia’s oldest symphony orchestra, and launches a first-ever residency.
The season opens Tuesday, Sept. 27, 7:30 p.m. in EJ Thomas Hall with the Emerson String Quartet’s world premiere of a composition by English composer Mark-Anthony Turnage, commissioned to celebrate Emerson’s 40th anniversary.
The Akron audience will hear the world premiere of “Shroud” before performances of the piece at Lincoln Center in New York City and Wigmore Hall in London. Turnage will present the pre-concert talk at 6:30 p.m.
Tuesday Musical’s 129th season also features So Percussion with the Akron Symphony Orchestra on Oct. 15, soprano Dina Kuznetsova and violinist Jinjoo Cho on Nov. 22, the Imani Winds on Jan. 25, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic on March 1, and the Escher String Quartet on April 26.
All Main Stage Season concerts are in EJ Thomas Hall at 7:30 p.m., except for the Oct. 15 concert that begins at 8 p.m. All include pre-concert talks one hour before the performance.
Subscriptions are on sale now and include new Tickets-on-Demand packages of three or four tickets that can be redeemed for concerts throughout the season. New subscribers save 50 percent on subscriptions, and all subscription packages provide significant savings on single-ticket prices.
Single-concert tickets go on sale Aug. 22. Except for the Oct. 15 concert, tickets are $25, $40, $45 and free for all students of any age. The exception is the Oct. 15 concert, which is a collaboration with the Akron Symphony. The Oct. 15 tickets are $20 to $55 and free for students.

So Percussion with the Akron Symphony Orchestra
Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016, at 8 p.m.; pre-concert talk by composer David Lang at 7 p.m.

So Percussion’s performance with the Akron Symphony will feature percussion concerto man made by composer David Lang, Pulitzer/Grammy winner and 2016 Oscar nominee. Lang will give the pre-concert talk at 7 p.m. man made was commissioned by London’s Barbican Centre and the Los Angeles Philharmonic; So performed it with Gustavo Dudamel for the opening of the LA Phil’s 2014-15 season. In the first three movements, the percussionists play against the forceful backdrop of the orchestra using “found” instruments: twigs, tuned wine bottles, metal pipes, trash bins. In the final section, repeating harmonic cycles bring the entire group together. The program will also feature the Akron Symphony performing Holst’s The Planets. So recently completed a four-concert residency at Lincoln Center Festival and its fifth Carnegie Hall appearance. In December the quartet returns to Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Next Wave Festival with A Gun Show, a new evening-length work that is a multidimensional meditation on guns in America.

We Knew Them When: Jinjoo Cho and Dina Kuznetsova

Once Tuesday Musical student scholarship recipients and now acclaimed professionals, Dina Kuznetsova and Jinjoo Cho return to perform for the organization that helped launch their careers. Gold medalist of the 2014 Ninth Quadrennial International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, violinist Jinjoo Cho made her first appearance on the international music scene when she garnered the grand prize and Radio Canada’s People’s Choice Award at the 2006 Montreal International Musical Competition at age 17. She won Tuesday Musical scholarships in 2012 and 2014, and made her solo debut at Carnegie Hall this past June. A native of Moscow, soprano Dina Kuznetsova is an alumna of The University of Akron School of Music and the Ryan Opera Center at Lyric Opera of Chicago. She won a Tuesday Musical scholarship in 1996. Since then she has attracted the attention of the world’s major opera companies for her outstanding musicianship and compelling stage presence. Kuznetsova has performed in many of the world’s greatest opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House, Berlin’s Staatsoper, The Bolshoi Theatre, and the San Francisco and Chicago lyric operas.

Imani Winds

Extolled by the Washington Post as “exuding a sultry sophistication during performances,” Imani Winds has established itself as one of the most successful chamber music ensembles in the United States. With two member composers and a deep commitment to commissioning new work, the Grammy-nominated group is enriching the traditional wind quintet repertoire while bridging European, American, African and Latin American traditions.

Russia’s oldest symphony orchestra will fill EJ Thomas Hall with its soul-stirring signature sound. “We play with our hearts,” says concertmaster Lev Klychkov. Formed in 1882, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic was initially known as the “Imperial Music Choir” and performed privately for the court of Alexander III of Russia. Richard Strauss conducted it in 1912. The Guardian of London has declared the St. Petersburg Philharmonic as “probably the world’s greatest orchestra.” Featuring piano soloist Nikolai Lugansky, this is also Tuesday Musical’s annual Margaret Baxtresser Piano Concert.
Escher String Quartet
Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at 7:30 p.m.; pre-concert talk at 6:30 p.m.

Tuesday Musical’s 2016-17 Main Stage Season ends with the Escher String Quartet. Newly named as Tuesday Musical’s first Quartet-in-Residence, Escher also serves as artists of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Other recent performance venues include the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the Ravinia and Caramoor festivals. The quartet is also making a distinctive impression in Europe, with recent engagements including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Auditorium du Louvre in Paris, and the Conservatoire de Musique in Geneva, among others. The Tuesday Musical residency is a multi-year performance and education initiative beginning with this concert season.
