Back in February of 1997, President Bill Clinton chose the University of Akron E J Thomas Hall to host his first town hall meeting regarding the issues of race. “I challenge all Americans to join me for at least a year in addressing the enormous challenge of making one America out of all of our racial, ethnic diversity in this country,” said Clinton.
Today, the University of Akron holds true to his challenge by recently hosting its 10th annual Rethinking Race week event. Beginning in the month of February during Black History month, the two-week event included a variety of films, face-to-face conversations, a keynote speaker series, theatrical performances, poetry and other inspiring events throughout each day.
“It really made me think about how we are truly all equal,” said one student participant. “We are all human beings. Race should not separate who we are and the relationship we have with one another.”
