Akron Soul Train is offering community members a look at the work of its current artist fellows at the Inaugural Winter Soulstice exhibition and event Dec. 9 at Summit Artspace, from 5 to 8 p.m. The event will showcase work by the organization’s 2017 fall fellows including Stephen Tomasko, Jenniffer Omaitz, Michelle Droll and Danny Volk.
The art to be on display was created during each artists’ fellowship and will cover a breadth of disciplines, including landscape photography, abstract painting, mixed media sculpture and socially engaged video.
Over the course of the evening, attendees will have opportunity to mingle with the artists, buy
their artworks to support Akron Soul Train, along with having specialty hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar curated by Jilly’s Music Room.
VIP hour, with purchase of ticket, will be from 5 to 6 p.m. includes unlimited all-night drinks, specialty hors d’oeuvres, a live jazz trio and an AST swag thank you bag. Open exhibition
hours are free and open to the public from 6 to 8 p.m. and will include hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar.
This past summer the Akron Soul Train Fellowship Selection Committee chose four fellows out of
over 20 applications—three full-time artists for month long fellowships and one part-time fellow who completed a project over the course of a couple months.
Along with creating new bodies of work, each fellow designed and completed community programming including workshops hosted at Summit Artspace and artist talks at the Akron Art Museum. Akron Soul Train’s 2018 fellowship application will be released in early spring.
