Following up their high-flying run of ‘Peter Pan’ this summer, Weathervane Playhouse presents ‘Peter and the Starcatcher’ the story of how Peter came to Neverland and went from a nameless orphan to one of the best known boys of all time. A dozen actors play more than 100 characters using imaginative staging to tell the story of this iconic character.
“’Peter and the Starcatcher’ is the story of ordinary people – pirates, orphans, loyal British subjects — before they encounter magic. Starstuff changes them into the iconic, fanciful characters we all know and love from J.M. Barrie’s ‘Peter Pan,’” said Melanie Pepe, Artistic Director of Weathervane Playhouse and director for this production. “Where our production of ‘Peter Pan’ had flying and large set pieces, much of ‘Peter and the Starcatcher’ is intentionally in the imaginative interpretation of the actors and the audience.”
The play takes place on a minimalist set allowing the audience to be taken to a place where imagination and fantasy are the norm.
“The concept behind ‘Peter and the Starcatcher’ involves borrowing innovative elements from historical theatre – puppetry, physical storytelling, thunder sheets and wooden bird calls. The production also invites the audience to conjure up the world of the play using found objects as props and costume pieces for mermaids, fierce island natives, pirates and the magic of starstuff,” Pepe added.
‘Peter and the Starcatcher’ runs from now through March 6. Tickets are $14 for adults, $11 for those 17 and under, and are available at weathervaneplayhouse.com or by calling the box office at 330-836-2626.
Weathervane’s Emerging Artist Series provides opportunities for younger actors or those emerging in their art a chance to perform shows, often for families and children, three times per season in addition to performance, music, and acting classes offered year-round from the theater’s education department. Earlier this season, emerging artists performed ‘Peter Pan’ and the beloved classic ‘A Christmas Carol the Musical.’ The 2016-17 season will be announced soon.
Weathervane Playhouse provides high-quality live theater with volunteer artists, designers, and technicians under professional direction, delivers education and training in theater arts and appreciation, and engages and entertains its audience to enrich the quality of life in Northeast Ohio.
