Weathervane Playhouse July 15, 16, and 17 at the sixth annual 8×10 TheatreFest.
“The beauty of the 8×10 TheatreFest is that it’s like a eating from a sampler box of chocolates or participating in speed dating event. You get a lot of variety and if you are watching a play that isn’t quite your style – another one will be along in ten minutes,” said Brandi Eaton, director of “Third Window from the Right.”
All of the festival’s plays have two things in common – each is 10 minutes long and all feature an envelope of cash as a prop. The envelope of cash served as the “inspiration” for this year’s contest. Over 160 plays were submitted to the Weathervane contest from 29 states and five countries including Canada, Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Volunteer judges read and chose the top plays. All Finalist playwrights receive at least a $50 prize and the top three – as determined by audience vote, will receive $150, $250, and $350. Audiences will also choose the special prop “inspiration” for next year’s competition.
Performances of the eight plays are at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, July 15, and Saturday, July 16. Sunday’s performance is a matinee at 2:30 p.m., followed by a reception and announcement of the winners. Tickets are $12.
“The 8×10 TheatreFest is truly one of the most enjoyable theatre events ever. The audience gets to be the first to ever see eight short plays be performed. The actors and directors get to be involved in the very first production of a play. Playwrights get bragging rights that one of their works has been fully produced. It is a win, win, win situation filled with laughter, drama, fun, and excitement for everyone!” Scott K. Davis, director of “Port City Blues.”
“Is the envelope of cash borrowed? Stolen? Lent? A debt, payment or donation? Won or lost? Lost or found? God or taxes? These playwrights have the stories to explain it all,” said Artistic Director Melanie YC Pepe.
