Akron Symphony Music Director and Conductor Christopher Wilkins renewed his contract last month and will remain in Akron through 2018. The Akron Symphony announced the news as the orchestra, under Wilkins direction, prepares for several major productions in the second half of the current concert season.
“I am thrilled to see the relationship between Christopher and the orchestra continue to thrive and flourish,” says Paul Jarrett, Akron Symphony Executive Director. “Akron will continue to benefit from Christopher’s commitment to artistic excellence and community engagement.”
“It’s been a tremendous experience making music with our great orchestra,” says Maestro Wilkins. “They make such a difference in this community through their extraordinary performances, but also because they have always been generous with their time and talent.”
Wilkins’ contract was set to expire at the end of the 2014-2015 season. The three-year renewal extends his contract from July 1, 2015, through June 30, 2018, which means he will continue to lead the Akron Symphony Orchestra through the 2017-2018 season.
“Akron is a better place to live and work because it has a fine symphony orchestra, and Maestro Wilkins provides the musical leadership and creative energy to help that orchestra achieve its best,” shared Mark Auburn, Ph.D, president of the Board of Trustees for the Greater Akron Musical Association (GAMA), which operates the Akron Symphony. “His collaborative visions for the next three or four seasons promise excellence for all the arts in our home counties.”
Wilkins became Music Director of the Akron Symphony in the fall of 2006. Since then, the orchestra’s programming has reflected his strong interest in community-oriented projects. During his tenure, he has made it a priority to develop partnerships with artists and organizations based in Northeast Ohio, and to develop educational programming for people all ages, interests and backgrounds.
“I am thankful to everyone on the GAMA team – our staff, artistic leaders, Youth Orchestras, Chorus, Gospel Meets Symphony Choir, Guild, and our devoted Board of Trustees,” remarks Wilkins. “I’m excited about all the opportunities ahead for us over the next three seasons.”
