The Akron Yoga Summit, which kicks off tomorrow, is a four day festival and part of the Akron Peace Project’s 7th Annual Peace Week.
The gathering will unite yoga leaders for a weekend of empowerment, leadership development, ahimsa (non-violence), friendship and service.
The organizers stress that yoga is for everybody.
On Thursday, Sept. 22, the Akron Yoga Summit will begin with Everyone Can Do Yoga Day! It’s a full day of classes (10 a.m. to 8 p.m.) at Summit Lake Community Center, 380 W. Crosier Street. This event aims to break down stereotypes of who can practice Yoga.
“Yoga is way of life,” says organizer Kelly McHood, from Rooted Akron. “Yoga means union. Union with your higher power (if you have one!), your community and your true nature as the incredible gift to this world that you are. It is about exploration and introspection. It is about finding a way to move beyond pleasure and pain to find balance. Yoga is about allowing yourself to find the time to find yourself. Yoga is for everybody,” she adds. “Even if you never step on a mat, you can still practice yoga.”
Everyone Can Do Yoga Day will offer classes and practices that suit individuals (including expectant parents, toddlers, the deaf community, people in addiction recovery, those who have anxiety and depression and people with disabilities, among others) who may have thought to themselves at one point “I can’t do Yoga because…”. Also, Thursday’s event is free.
The Akron Yoga Summit will continue for three more days at The Well CDC, located at 647 E. Market St., with over 35 teachers from the Greater Akron yoga and meditation community coming together to offer a piece of their wisdom in classes and workshops on a variety of topics and takes on yoga. Classes includes movement, meditation, music, philosophy and other practices. The classes are open to all skill levels.
“The premise of the Akron Yoga Summit is to provide a sacred space for individuals to explore the various aspects of Yoga, highlight the incredible talent in our area and bring together teachers from different studios, businesses and organizations in order to foster a greater sense of community and connection,” McHood says.
